Diabetic Foot Problems

It is not uncommon for a diabetic to experience foot problems. When there is too much glucose in the blood stream, serious complications that stem from the foot arises. Complications happen when too much glucose affects the nerves in your body’s lower extremities. It cuts off feelings in the lower part of your body, medically known as “sensory diabetic neuropathy”. This can become fatal especially if you don’t feel cuts inflicted on your foot.

Cuts heal slowly because the blood flow in the body is impeded. Diabetes affects the functions of the blood vessels, resulting in your body’s slow healing abilities. When these problems worsen, it can lead to amputation.

In addition to these fatal concerns, other pressing foot problems experienced by diabetics include athlete’s foot. The lack of nerve functionality in a diabetic’s foot can cause athlete’s foot to worsen. This can be treated through topical creams.

It is also not unheard of for diabetics to suffer from skin problems in the foot such as corns, a condition where the skin in between toes builds and hardens up. Those who often subject their feet to shoe torture might also experience blistering. Blisters in diabetics have higher chances of getting infected because of their slow healing rate. This is why it is important to wear proper shoes or immediately treat blisters before they get infected.

Keeping the feet properly moisturized is also vital. Lotions and essential oils can keep the foot skin soft. Dryness can result to cracks, which might then progress to something more serious like fungal infection.
